Mission
The Virginia Scholarship and Youth Development Foundation (VSYDF) is a non-profit organization that had its beginning in 1990 when Tim and Daphne Reid formed the Tim Reid Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation's mission is to create "Universal Understanding Through Education". The Foundation accomplishes this by raising funds to award scholarships to deserving at-risk and needy high school students.
Our scholarship recipients are truly trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. Many are the first in their families to attend and obtain a college education. We currently have twenty-four (24) students attending eleven (11) different colleges and universities. With your help, we can continue to assist these students and many more by continuing to raise funds and making the dream of a college education come true for deserving students.
The challenges' facing today's youth are numerous and daunting and the Foundation wants to ensure that our talented young students have an opportunity to cultivate their minds and have an opportunity to create a better future for themselves, their families, their community and the world.
How we accomplish our goal.
For the past eighteen years, actors Tim and Daphne Reid have worked tirelessly, with the Foundation, to raise funds to acheive this goal. The major fundriser for the VSYDF is The Tim Reid Celebrity Weekend. This event is held annually. Tim and Daphne Reid invite many of their friends to come to the Tidewater Area to participate in a weekend of events. The Celebrity Weekend attracts over 5,000 people annually. Major support is solicited from corporations, organizations, businesses, and friends. The weekend is heavily advertised on radio, television and in print media and our major supporters are mentioned in our advertisements. They are also able to take advantage of an exciting marketing and promotiional opportunity which allows them to give back to the community.
Who we fund.
Scholarship applications are mailed to Guidance Counselors in all high schools in Hampton Roads and neighboring areas of VA. They are asked to distribute the applications to qualifying youth. See the qualifying criteria on the Scholarship Application page of this website.
