Scholarship Application

Deadline: Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2010

The Virginia Scholarship and Youth Development Foundation’s purpose  is to provide access to higher educa­tion for high school graduating seniors who without financial aid and scholarship assistance would not have the opportunity to receive a college education.   The scholarship is to be applied towards tuition, room and board.  Funds will be issued over a four (4)/five (5) year period (based on graduation) as long as the student meets the necessary qualifications.

Scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria:

1. High School seniors must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 or above out of 4.0.  A score of  900 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT. The applicant’s high school counselor must submit the transcript and scores.
2. Applicants should submit three letters of recommendation from sources other than relatives, with personal knowledge of their abilities.
3. Applicants must complete the application form and include all requested information:
4. Applicants must submit their financial aid award letter.

5.   Eligible recipients for the Virginia Scholarship and Youth Development Foundation shall be limited to those individuals who would otherwise not be financially able to obtain a college education.  They must show good moral character and must express ambition and the potential for success in a college environment.

6.       Scholarship recipients must have the college/school registrar provide official notification of enrollment before scholarship funds will be issued.  The Virginia Scholarship and Youth Development Foundation Board of Directors will notify recipient.

Extracurricular Activities.  Describe school/community activities, honors and any other special achievements.  Provide the year (s) in which you participated, description of the activity and any positions held.  (Attach a separate sheet if additional space is needed)

OTHER INFORMATION REQUIRED WITH THIS  APPLICATION:

1. Attach an essay consisting of no less than 250 words, highlight those personal accomplishments, achievements, and experiences that have given you considerable satisfaction and have helped to form your character.  Be sure to comment on your aspirations in terms of your educational goals.   Explain the difference receiving a scholarship would mean in your life. 

2.  Attach three (3) letters of recommendation from persons who know your capabilities and/or background.  Do not use relatives.

3.  Have your school counselor mail an up-to-date, official transcript of your academic record and SAT/ACT scores directly to the Virginia Scholarshipand Youth Development Foundation Committee at
